U.S. Existing-Home Sales
Chart of the Week for June 23, 2017 - June 29, 2017
On a monthly basis, the National Association of Realtors publishes data on the number of existing-home sales in the U.S and four geographic regions. The data includes condos and co-ops in addition to single family homes, and existing-home sales account for 85-90% of total home sales in the U.S.
The chart above shows the number of units sold in millions for June 2016 through May 2017 in an overall slightly growing trend. The data ranged from a low of 5.3 million units in July 2016 to a high of 5.7 million units in March 2017. The sales for May 2017 represented a 1.1% increase from the April 2017 figures, and units sold are up 2.6% for the period covered by the chart. The months of supply on market increased slightly in May 2017 from April 2017 (4.2 months compared to 4.1 months) and the median home price of an existing home increased to $252,800 in May 2017 from $245,000 in April 2017.
