I think we should start by looking at how long a the economy takes to bounce back, probably the most extreme case scenario; Considering that's when you "need" the money. So it would make sense to take the longest time it has shown to recover. Since I am not planning to rely on retirement I will be in the C, S, or I fund up until 2 years before retirement.
It's just an opinion though.
Being predictive in nature, the markets will always bounce back prior to an economic bounce back. By the time you know that the economy has bounced back, the markets may already be turning negative.
