U.S. Vehicle Sales
Chart of the Week for February 3, 2017 - February 9, 2017
U.S. vehicle sales in January 2017 were 17.5 million units on a seasonally adjusted annualized rate ("SAAR") basis as noted in the chart above covering the period January 2012 through January 2017. Sales have generally been strong over that period, increasing from a low of 14.0 million units in January 2012 to a high of 18.3 million units in December 2016. The January 2017 number was a 25% increase from January 2012. Light truck sales increased to 63% of the vehicles sold in January's report compared to 48% in January 2012, as low gasoline prices and rising construction spending helped that sector.
Some economists see the last two years of auto sales possibly representing a peak, as rising gasoline prices and potential changes to U.S. trade and tax policies may lead sales back to the 16.5 million units trend level by 2018.
