In the months that you are deployed to a tax free zone, it's definitely better to use Roth. Also, if you are tax free a majority of the year, Roth will likely be the better option unless your spouse earns a considerable amount. I would only invest after tax dollars in the traditional TSP if I was close to retirement and had already maxed out the Roth. Otherwise, a Roth IRA or taxable account is probably preferable.

Also keep in mind deploying to tax free zones. Then the regular TSP is tax free for life. The TSP will keep that money separate from the rest.

In seeing just the enlisted military investment side, I thought most TSP investors had similar situations. This conversation has definitely opened my eyes to how different incomes and ages can make the Roth a less appealing option. I will definitely reevaluate my contributions if my income rises to the point where I don't get all of my taxes back and it begins to affect my investment percentage.
