Most people are in a lower tax bracket after they retire. If they don't have investments or tsp they will
usually have less than half the money coming in as when they were working. Investment dividends and capital gains are taxed at a lower rate than wages.

Also, the traditional provides a tax break now. You can invest those additional funds, if you wish, in addition to your TSP and IRA.
Also, if you open a HSA, those funds may also be invested for future returns while providing current a current tax break.
