If you think this is the beginning of a recession of any sort, we're still at record level highs and now is a great time to move to the G fund. If your think this is more short term, then it is best to ride it out. Look at the history prior to 2 years ago, we're still higher than ever, even today.

Ray,
I have a 100% of my portfolio in one single fund. I do between 4-5 transfers at year.I keep my contributions in the same fund I have the rest of the investment. With this volatility I expect to move more often more not more than once per month. TSP is not made to be trading often to keep the transaction fees low. Few years ago the TSP max the intertransfer to two times per month and after that you only can move it to the G fund. Is few traders are aloud to trade very often it will increase the cost for all participants. I definitely do not recommend to move that G fund, it will be traying time the market it and that is a high risk game.
At this time the S fund is -3.81% I expect it will end around -3%.

Erick, sounds like a well reasoned and balanced approach, seeking reasonable growth while managing risk. How often do you expect to do transfers? How much of your portfolio do you move with each transfer?Regards, Ray QuickOn Tue, Jan 19, 2016 at 9:48 PM, Erick Estela erick.estela@yahoo.com [TSP_Strategy] <TSP_Strategy@yahoogroups.com> wrote:I believe that as a part of a strategy we must have discipline and not to be emotional about it. I like to pre-set how much I am willing to loose and for me was 5%, is when I moved 100% to the G fund. Now I am using the oil prices and watching closely the 200, 30 and 10 moving average of the S&P500 to get back to C. When the small Caps are not considered overvalued I'll move to the S fund long term but I (and most articles) don't see that happening anytime soon. Short term I'll be between G and C and trading more often that what I'd like but I don't see a better strategy. I may loose some of the initial bouncing but I am not looking to find the bottom and the top, I will follow where the cash flow is going. It worked for me last year and this year does not seems too different. On Tuesday, January 19, 2016 7:37 PM, "elstaub@yahoo.com [TSP_Strategy]" <TSP_Strategy@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
I'm watching and reading. Thanks to all of for the various perspectives. Even if I'm not thrilled with how things are going it's quite entertaining and educating to read all this.
