Yes, this January's stock plummet is unprecedented. But that's a short term issue, right? Why do you expect small caps to perform differently over the next several years than they have over the past 1-, 5- and 10-year time frames, and thus break even with and outperform large caps?
Small caps generally outperform large caps during bull markets. Secondly, while the large caps have been in new high ground recently, the small caps have only approached their previous highs of 2000. As such, assuming the bull market continues, the small caps should have more room to move. That said, small caps also decline more in bear markets. We'll continue to monitor these highly unusual January developments.
