When they initially offered the TSP option (1984 I believe) I asked my accountant if it was a good idea. His response really surprised me, "anyone you work that doesn't jump on this is an idiot". At the time the max I could put in was I think 3% (may have been 5%). He said your take home pay will go up if you do. And darn if he wasn't right. After contributing the max allowed my take home pay went up about $20 a payday. Been a believer ever since, and at the max ever since.
Boy am I glad I did now. Retiring on Oct 1 this year!
