It's basically now to the point that you have to do your own research and homework as there are no ramifications to the "benefits staff" if they give you erroneous information. Until we find a way to hold them accountable, then it's best to just take the time to do your own research.
For those overseas (especially Army civilians), you may recall the LQA fiasco from about three years ago. Poor guidance from the "specialists" almost cost employees thousands and thousands of dollars.

guy I work with that he can retire 1 year earlier because he
has over 2000 hours of sick leave. He's convinced
he's eligible to retire this August (when he only has 29
years of service) rather than in August 2017 when he gets
his 30 years. Sometimes you really have to double check
what a "benefits staff" person is telling you.
