Ever since I came in to the civilian service in the early 90's everyone has tried selling me on the story that FERS is better than CSRS. I agree on face value it seems nicer and I know the math they sell that in the long run FERS will earn more. I don't deny that our FERS system is a nice retirement, especially today compared to private sector.
Call me simple but I go by this simple litmus - When you retire do can you retire and get a job if you feel like it or will you retire and NEED to get another job? Most all of my CSRS friends retire and actually, you know, retire. Most all of my FERS friends retired right after they got another job lined up.
Fact is, in reality, the FERS retirement is not conducive to actually retiring without getting another job and CSRS was. This is of course barring extraordinary situations.
I am certain people can throw multiple examples of people they know on FERS who are living the high life on retirement but I haven't seen them. Man, it sure is fun watching my CSRS friends post all their retirement adventures online though.
