Interest Rate Expectations March 2016
Chart of the Week for March 18, 2016 - March 24, 2016
The National Association for Business Economics ("NABE") conducts its Economic Policy Survey semiannually to gather its members' views. Results of the March 2016 survey question regarding interest rate expectations, which included responses from 252 members of the NABE, are shown in the chart above.
Thirty-nine percent of the respondents expect the Federal Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve Board to increase the target rate range for Fed Funds, short term interest rates, twice in 2016. A total of 79% of the respondents expect between one and three increases, and only 3% expect the target rate to decrease. According to the current NABE President, "A large and growing majority of business economists expects the Federal Open Market Committee to continue raising the near-term target for the for the federal funds rate throughout 2016."
Interest rate changes, like other factors, are uncertain and may influence your investment decisions. However, prudent investors should invest based on their own circumstances taking into consideration their goals, investment experience, time horizon and risk tolerance.
