One of the reasons people work in the public sector is the pension. Many Feds put Country first and that is their number 1 reason they work for uncle Sam. Next is the pension and the security that comes with it in exchange for lower wages than they would receive in private enterprise (average to high wage earners). When you say: "Relying on the government to do everything for you is the reason for the looming disaster in this country," you are mixing ideas. First off - I 100% disagree with your sentiments. The reason this Country has had an economic crises has little to do with the type of "reliance" you speak of, but rather it has to do with the reliance of corporate America on corporate welfare while shipping most of the good jobs out of our country leaving an "underclass" of people that have no employment, little training, and little hope. Regardless - you are missing the point - even if I were to subscribe to your assertion, the government worker that was hired on the premise of a pension incorporated that into their decisions as to whether to accept the position. It was part of the job contract, plain and simple. It isn't a handout in any sense. It is part of the compensation package for the employee.
