Oh I see. If that's the case, then the matching funds may go into Traditional TSP, instead of Roth TSP. Right? Otherwise, it will be very complicated to determine exact amount of the matching fund contribution due to the tax withdrawal amounts. Wouldn't it?

Finally, an answer that is accurate and correct. TSP will match up to 5% regardless if the employee is contributing to to traditional or Roth IRA. The deciding factor is is the 5% contribution from the employee. On Wednesday, February 28, 2018, 10:07:41 PM GMT+1, Daniel Glushko danielglushko@yahoo.com [TSP_Strategy] <TSP_Strategy@yahoogroups.com> wrote:Agency contributions go into traditional regardless of your designation.

So how do I figure out contributing as much to Roth TSP while getting full agent's match? Like making sure 5% of my salary to Traditional TSP, and rest to Roth?
Thanks

Mike,
Current 2018 limit is 18,500 for Roth & Traditional TSP total combined. Plus an extra 6,000 for catch-up over 50.
TSP will give you the automatic 1% even if you are full Roth, but if you want the extra matching you will have to keep contributing some minimum to Traditional.
I got a windfall last year, so I was maxing out everything. But, I was too aggressive. I tried to slow it down in Oct 17 so I would get matching through the last paychecks of the year. That of course was the week they went through the software upgrades and no changes could be made. I kept trying, but the upgrade stopped the contribution changes from Roth to Traditional.
Long story. But the lesson was that I only got the 1% automatic for the last four or five paychecks. They eventually called me and tried to sort it out, but it was too much for their green eye-shade folks to figure out.
Hope the helps.
