Investor Sentiment
Chart of the Week for March 23, 2018 - March 29, 2018
AAII is an independent corporation that assists individuals in becoming effective managers of their assets through programs on education, information, and research. On a weekly basis, they survey their members' sentiment on the direction of stock prices over the next six months. The chart above shows the responses since the start of 2018.
As the stock market became more volatile starting in February, investor responses changed. Bullish sentiment generally declined, with the March 15th response of 36.8% well below the January 4th response of 59.8%, and also below the historical average of 38.5%. Bearish sentiment was 21.3% on March 15, 2018, up from 15.6% on January 4th, but also below its historical average of 30.5%. Another change was the almost doubling of Neutral sentiment, which was 41.8% for March 15th, well above the January 4th response of 24.7%. The last two weeks represent the first consecutive weeks with Neutral values above 40% since last summer. The survey notes that trade policy, higher interest rates, the political climate, earnings, and economic growth were among the factors influencing the survey.
