MSCI All Country World Index
Chart of the Week for March 9, 2018 - March 15, 2018
Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) is an institutional research provider who's products include various indexes that track global equity market performance. The MSCI All Country World Index (ACWI) is a market capitalization-weighted index designed to provide a broad measure of equity market performance throughout the world and captures about 85% of global investible equities.
The chart above shows the ACWI month-end value from September 2016 through February 2018 with the February 2018 close being the first monthly decline since October 2016. ACWI had increased for 15 consecutive months from November 2016 to January 2018, the longest such streak in ACWI history according to Business Insider. As U.S. equity markets became volatile in February 2018 over concerns about increasing interest rates and other factors, the declines spread to other markets around the world as well. One monthly decline does not make a trend and economists note that while equities are subject to volatility, equities have generated better returns than most other investments over the long run.
