I certainly do not try nor succeed at timing the market.  I use SMAs to help me understand the trend, and I try and act on trends.  If you can avoid *most* of the downturns and be present in most of the gains you will do fine.  It sure beats riding the escalator all the way down, and then all the way back up, but if that's your strategy I wish you all the luck!
