Seriously, Goldman Sachs...
...There is what they are telling the public through the media
...There is what they are telling their small clients
...There is what they are telling their large clients
...There is what they are doing with their own books
"Goldman Sachs to clients: whoops. Just six weeks into 2016, the New York-based bank has abandoned five of six recommended top trades for the year."
...then on gold
Goldman tells their clients to short gold 5 days after saying gold may soar much higher over time. I wonder what they are doing with their own books...
...as for me
I am currently trying to determine if the market is going to go over the cliff within a couple of weeks or are we going to see a small bear market rally in March and April like in 2008 before going over the cliff this summer. Last week was Options Expirations week and during 2015 nine out of 12 months saw a rally leading up to that week. Only once did the market not give that rally back the week after (this week). So I am watching to see where the bottom comes in this week (assuming it bottoms).
While you are hoping for that rally to sell into watch bond prices and credit spreads. Bond prices so far are not buying the current rally. Credit spreads are basically back to where they were in 2008. Gross corporate profits are no higher than they were in 2011!!! In my opinion, you are speculating not investing if you are holding equities in the current environment until their valuations reset significantly.
I've been completely out of the market for some time, but I am watching to see if there are signs of a sustainable bear market rally. So far the answer has been no. The next couple of weeks will be telling.
As for gold, we are close enough to the bottom if you are thinking of buying. And by the time the technical analysis crowd gives a buy signal it may be much higher. Only buy physical since there are hundred of paper claims for every one ounce of physical gold available for delivery. When the golden musical chairs game stops there are going to be a lot of unhappy players with no gold to hold.
