Del Brett,

To respond on your comment on "not sure where you read that bull!", please visit the following site and see the banner at top.
This is one of many places that you'll see this type of opinion and you call them all "BULL"?  I certainly welcome your comments, but I'd appreciate if you could recognize that this is a very diverse universe where everybody may try to contribute for a common wealth, not expressing angers toward a person with a different idea than what you believe.

One more thing! The comments that I made here is for TSP investment, not for the selected companies that you may have access to them.  So you're talking about a specific cases and I'm talking about a general case with a economic sense.  Do you agree?

Del Brett,

Of course "buy and hold" works for a solid company with strong fundamental and growth potential as well.  The problem is identifying those company to invest for a long term.  If it's easy for everybody, why the heck majority of people lost their life saving during those financial crisis we had in the past? Anyway, even those strong companies take hit when the entire markets take hit.  I'll ask you a simple question to respond that comment.  Let's start with a assumption that the companies comprise the S&P 500 are known to be a fairly good companies. Is it fair assumption?  OK! Then, if you had fully invested in S&P 500 index since year 2000 and you never sold or buy it back, then how much do you really think it has gained?  The SPX top at year 2000 was around 1553 and currently at around 1980.  I'm talking a real gain in terms of " Time Value Money" sense which means you must consider annual inflation for 15 years.  So would it be fair to assume that annual inflation of around 2.2%?  If you plug these number into your calculator, the SPX has to be above 2153 to call even with the year 2000 top.  So for 15 years you may have gain none if you have invested in SPX.  I'm just talking about in general stock market sense, not for a specific company.  To invest a specific company with an excellent performance record, you probably need a paid financial adviser.  Other wise, you must have a gifted talent in picking a good stock.  Good luck!

Just remember this: Friends don't tell their friends that "Stocks are for a long term investment, so just buy and hold".     I
really don't believe this as I been doing it for years and have made a half million on stock shares  that cost 100,000. and been getting dividends and dividend increases every year and never sold a share and have 4 company's that I have like that.  I
think if I had more friends that did what I did they wouldn't be needing loans and filing bankruptcy and still working, not sure
where you read that bull!

Especially, volatile days like past couple of weeks, if you had some assets out side of TSP, you could have placed some hedging against the market downturn to preserve your capital.  Just remember this: Friends don't tell their friends that "Stocks are for a long term investment, so just buy and hold".
