I disagree on your comments: "You cannot eat gold. You cannot plant gold. You cannot drink gold. Gold will not provide you shelter."
During a hyper inflationary times, your money will buy you a far less value than what you think would buy, but you can certainly depend on "GOLD" during for getting anything you mentioned in your comments. I'm not speculating that we'll have a hyper inflation in a near future, but if you can just think about "How long can a country keep printing money without having any intrinsic value behind the money being printed increased?". I'm aware that gold has been in a bear market for several years, but "How long can the equity bull market can sustain?" will be my answer to make any decision on investing in gold. Historically, the ratio of SPX/GOLD was trying to maintain a parity. What's the ration now? roughly 2:1 right? So what do you get anything out of this data?

Gold is worth only what people are willing to trade for it. The value of gold is a currency, just like anything else, it just isn't backed by a government. Its backed by the assumed intrinsic value of the metal, which as Sara said, fluctuates as do other currency prices. Gold really isn't worth anything more than what people believe it is worth. Until the "doomsday" happens and you need it, it just sits there loosing value, or you lost opportunity costs. I'll steer clear of it myself.
