Typically for me, even when a fund is down slightly, I don't "lose" per se because of the contributions I've made over the same period of time. This doesn't always hold true is the fund I'm invested in takes a big hit though. YTD the S fund is up nearly 5% though - better than the C which is only up 1.3%. The I fund is up 6.5%, but down 4% over the last 12 months. The I fund only showed big gains in 2 of those months, and lost money in 8. Sarah can answer the more complicated "why" question :-) The only way to "guarantee" not to lose money is to invest in G, but you also won't gain much and won't even keep up with inflation. Like many in the group say though, you have to do whatever helps you sleep better at night.

I don't have the knowledge to contribute to the group but I am a group member, a federal employee, and a TSP member... With that in mind I hope my question will get attention.
I just got my statement. Says I lost $500. Now here is my stupid question- Why? I though we were doing well in the S Fund- I've been in the fund since the group announced back in (April?). So did everyone who had 100% in the S fund loose money this last period? I don't understand so please take it slow....
