They are fee based financial planners. My funds are either ETFs or Institutional funds with very low costs. Yes, I pay a percentage to EFS, but they don't 'sell' me products.
You can 'try them before you buy them' as they'll do a free portfolio analysis for you. They'll even answer questions you have regardless if you are a client or not. When my father passed away, I wasn't sure what to do with some of the products his 'financial planner' (a commission based saleslady) had sold him. My EFS planner (who I hadn't hired yet), carefully walked me through each issue and option. It was part of what sold me on them. They have offices all over the country, but we use a planner in Maryland (even though I live in Vegas). I met him in his office when I was in DC on a rotational assignment. I have a plan that will accomplish my goals and objectives. That has resulted in a level of calmness regarding financial matters that didn't exist in the household prior working with EFS.
Ask any financial planner how they are compensated. If they get a commission, run away.
And, fwiw, depending on your situation you need to adjust your time horizon out to your end of life. Can you really go 30-40 years earning G-Fund interest only while withdrawing for retirement? You'll go broke slowly as inflation, which will come back, eats your buying power. With 3-4 decades to deal with, you can invest in equities as well as less volatile asset classes (though when interest rates go up, bond funds are going to look extremely volatile!).
