Chart of the Week for April 2, 2015 - April 9, 2015
Capital market returns were positive in the first quarter of 2015 for the asset classes shown above. Over the trailing 1-year period, U.S. Bonds, U.S. Stocks and Emerging Market Stocks provided positive returns and outperformed International Developed Market Stocks, which was the sole asset class shown with a negative return. Over the trailing 5- and 10-year periods, all asset classes shown had positive returns with U.S. Stocks outperforming U.S. Bonds and International Developed Market Stocks.
In contrast to the longer time periods, International Developed Market Stocks outperformed the other asset classes shown in the first quarter of 2015 with a 4.88% return. For the quarter, U.S. Small-Cap Stocks returned 4.32%, U.S. High Yield Bonds returned 2.52%, Emerging Market Stocks returned 2.24%, and U.S. Bonds returned 1.61%. U.S. Large-Cap Stocks eked out a 0.95% gain in the quarter and faced pressure from a rising U.S. dollar, falling oil prices, and uncertainty about future interest rate changes.
As usual, overall performance varied between time periods. U.S. Large-Cap Stocks was among the best performing asset classes over the 10-year period, and was the weakest asset class over the last quarter.

- U.S. High Yield Bonds are represented by the Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield Index.
- U.S. Large-Cap Stocks are represented by the S&P 500 Index.
- U.S. Small-Cap Stocks are represented by the Russell 2000 Index.
- International Developed Market Stocks are represented by the MSCI EAFE (Net) Index.
- Emerging Market Stocks are represented by the MSCI Emerging Markets (Net) Index.
