S&P 500 Index Sector Performance (as of 03/31/15)

Chart of the Week for April 10, 2015 - April 16, 2015

Nine of the ten of the S&P 500 Index sectors rose in the twelve month period ended March 31, 2015, compared to all ten of the sectors posting positive returns in the twelve month period ended March 31, 2014.

Similar to the stock market as a whole, returns for individual sectors of the stock market experience fluctuations. For example, a sector may outperform other sectors for a period of time and then underperform in subsequent periods. The chart above compares the performance of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index ("S&P 500"), including dividends, to its ten underlying sectors for the twelve month periods ended March 31, 2015 ("current" period) and March 31, 2014 ("prior" period). The S&P 500 is an index consisting of 500 companies representing larger capitalization stocks traded in the U.S. and is a benchmark commonly used to measure the performance of the U.S. stock market.

The S&P 500 gained 12.73% for the current period. All sectors, except Energy, posted positive returns and five of the ten sectors posted double-digit positive returns. In comparison, the S&P 500 gained 21.86% for the prior period, all of the ten sectors posted positive returns, and nine of the ten sectors posted double-digit positive returns.

The four sectors that outperformed the S&P 500 in the current period were led by Health Care (+26.19%), Consumer Discretionary (+18.26%), Information Technology (+18.11%), and Consumer Staples (+16.53%). In contrast, the six sectors that outperformed the S&P 500 in the prior period were led by Health Care (+29.24%), Industrials (+27.29%), Information Technology (+25.59%), Financials (+24.91%), Consumer Discretionary (+24.00%), and Materials (+23.29%). Energy, Telecom Services, and Utilities underperformed the S&P 500 in both periods.

Market and sector returns fluctuate from year to year depending upon a variety of factors, which are very difficult to forecast. Therefore, it is important to understand the principles of investing before establishing an investment strategy to help ensure that it is consistent with your personal goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon.
