The investing education offered through TD Ameritrade is Investools. If you Google Investools you will find they got a bad rap years ago. The bad rap wasn't necessarily about the education itself but about the cost and the tendency of Investools, then an independent company, to continually give sales pitches to students to sign up for additional course work. However, that was years ago. In 2009 and Investools was acquired by TD Ameritrade. Course prices came down and the high pressure sales tactics ceased. The retail prices on the educational offerings may still be pricy on the retail level. But if you have an account with TD Ameritrade they can be purchased an half off. Periodically they run promotions if you open an account or deposit to an existing account you get various courses and additional add-ons for free. The more you deposit the more you get free. My wife, also a retired federal employee, and I rolled enough over from our TSP accounts so I got the Stock Investing and Technical Analysis courses plus the add-on for free.
Now for the education package itself. All courses can be taken online and consist of the following components: A self-paced mixed media course with good information, but stuff you can probable pick up for free around the internet. Online workshops consisting of 6 webinars where a coach/instructor shares his screen to go over important aspects from the self-paced course. Questions can be asked via the Chat (text not voice).
Trading Rooms and Coaching Rooms: These are Webinar type offerings conducted at various times through out the day, 5 1/2 days a week. To me attending a Trading Room is the most valuable offering. The Coach conducting the Trading Room assumes the participants have been through the course work and workshop. The Coach bring up real time stock charts or other financial information to go over key concepts of the Coaches choosing. Stocks, ETF etc are researched, selected, and traded on a paper money account.
Coaching Rooms are similar except the Coach has no agenda. Participants chat in their questions and the Coach responds.
Direct one-on-one coaching over the telephone is available at an extra cost.
There are other offerings available, such as live multi day workshops. Of course those cost more.
Additionally, when you sign up for the educational packages you get access to a good array of online research and charting tools.
