U.S. Employment
Chart of the Week for March 20, 2015 - March 26, 2015
The U.S. economy has recovered all of the jobs lost in the Great Recession and grew by an additional 3 million jobs. Total nonfarm payroll jobs bottomed in February 2010 at slightly under 130 million jobs after losing more than 8.5 million jobs in the Great Recession. However over the past five years, almost 11.5 million nonfarm payroll jobs have been added.
The U.S. economy generated job gains in 56 of the last 60 months and the most recent monthly gain of 295,000 jobs in February 2015 is the 53rd consecutive month of positive job growth. In fact over the twelve month period through February 2015, 3.3 million jobs were added marking the largest twelve month job gain in the past decade.
The chart above illustrates U.S. employment based on the Total Nonfarm Payroll (golden line), which measures the number of U.S. workers in the economy, excluding those employed by private households, farms and non-profit organizations. Jobs are an important indicator of economic activity as it impacts consumer spending, a large component of the overall economy.
