Grocery Stores versus Restaurants and Bars
Chart of the Week for March 13, 2015 - March 19, 2015
The U.S. Census Bureau reported for the first time in its January 2015 Retail Sales report that U.S. consumers spent more money in restaurants and bars than they did at grocery stores. As shown in the chart above, grocery store spending was 14.5% more than restaurant and bar spending in January 2010. This gap was relatively constant until early 2014 when the gap began to close. During 2014, grocery store spending grew by 2.5%, while restaurant and bar spending grew by 9.3%.
Factors that may have influenced restaurant and bar spending outpacing grocery store spending include continuing job creation, improved consumer discretionary income, falling gasoline prices, and the economic recovery. Some economists are giving most of the credit of improved restaurant and bar spending to falling gas prices. Since gas prices have risen in the last month, this trend may not continue.
