Re: [TSP_Strategy] To take Medicare or not

 

I suspended my FEHB at 60, when I became eligible for Tricare Select. I'll be 61 in January. No Medicare or other supplements. There are no premiums, and the deductibles are 1/2 that of FEHB. Similar to FEHB insurance, preventive care costs nothing and for office visits with network providers, there is a $29 copay  (2019) and for specialists it's $41. Hospital stays will cost you $250 per night, but the out of pocket catastrophic limit is $3000, so your risk is low. I'm saving  $400 every month on premiums and 300 a year on deductibles, plus I pick up our meds for free at the local Air Force Base. This year, I've been to my regular doctor 5 times and seen 3 specialists. Had a colonoscopy, dermatology treatment and seen the urologist. I've had a CT scan due to a bout with Bell's Palsy. With all that, I've paid nothing besides the office visit copays. Next week, I'll be seeinga neurologist about a pinched nerve. Really am happy with just Tricare Select. I just don't see the benefit right now of paying for FEHB. Of course, at age 65 I'll have TFL + Medicare A & B.

When I turn 65 I'll be eligible for FEHB insurance, Medicare and Tricare for Life (as long as I pay for Medicare Part B). I'm thinking about suspending my FEHB at that time to see if Medicare Parts A & B and Tricare for Life will cover the bills. Does anyone have experience with that scenario?

Yes I think you need to sign up as they charge a penalty if
you don't and what I hear Medicare becomes the primary
and FEHB will pay what they don't pay.

I know this isn't the
format here, but I don't know where else I can ask my
question: I'm retired and turn 65 in January. I'm unsure
about taking Medicare. I would still keep my FEHB if I do
sign up. Any comments
