Chart of the Week for January 5, 2018 - January 11, 2018
Capital market returns were positive in the fourth quarter of 2017, with Emerging Market Stocks and U.S. Large-Cap Stocks posting the highest returns as shown in the graph above. Over the trailing 1-, 5-, and 10-year periods, all five asset classes posted positive returns with Emerging Market Stocks posting a 37.28% 1-year return.
For the fourth quarter of 2017, U.S. Large-Cap Stocks returned 6.64%, U.S. Small-Cap Stocks returned 3.34%, U.S. High Yield Bonds returned 0.47%, and U.S. Bonds returned 0.39% as U.S. economic reports were generally positive and the tax reform bill was signed into law in late December. The U.S. Federal Reserve raised its target interest rate range in the quarter for the third time in 2017, which impacted fixed income returns. Both Emerging Market Stocks (7.44%) and International Developed Market Stocks (4.23%) had positive fourth quarter returns as global economic conditions generally improved.

- Emerging Market Stocks are represented by the MSCI Emerging Markets (Net) Index.
