Charts of the Week
U.S. Internet Sales
Chart of the Week for May 19, 2017 - May 25, 2017
The chart above shows U.S. Internet Retail Sales as of the end of the first quarter for the past three years. This data is published quarterly by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Over the last two years, Internet sales rose from $80.3 billion to $105.7 billion, an increase of 31.6% as Americans continue to shop from home as opposed to visiting brick and mortar retail stores. The change over the last year was 14.6%. Internet sales as a percentage of overall retail sales also increased from 6.9% to 8.5% over the last two years. While that news is good for Internet retailers, the news has not been positive for retail employees, as the March 2017 Employment Report noted a loss of 30,000 retail jobs following the February 2017 Employment Report, which noted a loss of 26,000 retail jobs.
