"Overhead supply" is an area of resistance in a stock chart when a stock is moving upward after experiencing a downtrend. These areas of resistance represent prior purchases of the stock and serve to limit and frustrate a stock's upward movement. That's because the investors who made these prior purchases are motivated to sell their shares when the price returns to the level at which they bought it so they can end the pain by selling at break-even. In essence, these are the holders who are thinking "If I can just get back to even, I will sell." This can add enough selling pressure to thwart a stock's advance. That's why it is a good idea to buy stocks just as they are breaking out of sound bases into new high ground.
