Haven't read the article yet, but my wife works in the private industry and started saving to a Roth IRA when they first became available. We didn't make much combined income (less than $40k) and had a new baby. You CAN save, even if it's just a little, if you're disciplined and not living beyond your means. We DID overspend for a short period of time when we were a few years younger, but quickly learned we didn't like having that debt or the fact that it could take a while to pay it off if we only made the payments required.
