Capital Markets Review (As of 06/30/2019)

Chart of the Week for July 5, 2019 - July 11, 2019

Capital market returns were strong for the asset classes shown in the second quarter ended June 30, 2019.

Capital market returns were positive in the second quarter of 2019 for the asset classes shown above. U.S. Large-Cap Stocks posted the highest return, while Emerging Markets Stocks posted the lowest return. All asset classes had positive returns over the trailing 1-, 5-, and 10-year periods except for the U.S. Small-Cap Stocks 1-year return.

For the second quarter of 2019, global market returns were positive, as U.S. Large-Cap Stocks returned 4.30%, International Developed Market Stocks returned 3.68%, U.S. Bonds returned 3.08%, U.S. High Yield Bonds returned 2.50%, U.S. Small-Cap Stocks returned 2.10%, and Emerging Market Stocks returned 0.61%. In fact, U.S. Large-Cap Stocks ended the first half of the year with their best returns since 1997. Global trade concerns continued to impact capital market returns in the second quarter, but U.S. economic data was generally positive and financial assets as shown performed well. Low inflation and strong labor markets continued in the quarter, and the U.S. Federal Reserve Board kept the target rate range of the Federal Funds Rate unchanged at its June meeting.

The U.S. dollar fell during the quarter, which helped foreign returns. Both International Developed Market Stocks and Emerging Market Stocks posted positive returns in spite of concerns about the global trade situation causing Chinese equity markets to drop about 4.0% for the quarter.

In the chart above:

  • U.S. Bonds are represented by the Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index.
  • U.S. High Yield Bonds are represented by the Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield Index.
  • U.S. Large-Cap Stocks are represented by the S&P 500 Index.
  • U.S. Small-Cap Stocks are represented by the Russell 2000 Index.
  • International Developed Market Stocks are represented by the MSCI EAFE (Net) Index.
  • Emerging Market Stocks are represented by the MSCI Emerging Markets (Net) Index.
