Re: [TSP_Strategy] Re: Happy Holidays!

I have been retired for 2 years now. About 5 years before my retirement I transitioned from a more risk tolerant to a more risk adverse approach. Having been invested through the great recession I learned one thing - that is during times of consistent volitility I need to get out and wait it out until things calm down again. I was all in in 2008 until I lost 22% before I got out (while the markets lost in excess of 40% that year), but that loss still made me ill. I then gained 42% in 2009 after I got back in when it seemed the coast was clear. Now in retirement I cannot take a hit like I did back in 2008 since I rely on my TSP monthly withdrawals for a part of my annual revenue, and I no longer have the advantage of dollar cost averaging since I no longer contribute. If I just keep my money in the G fund, I project it out to last me until my 90's (if needed). However, I still keep dabbling in and out with from as low as 5% in equities to no more than 24% in them. My end of year return will be about 4%, which at this point seems to beat all TSP's investment options. My point is that it isn't always ok to swing for the fences, especially if the market is telling you not to (even if others are), or the closer you get to retirement .Try not to fall into a gambler's mind set with all your hard earned money. It's easy to take a loss if the economic effect is not immediately felt in your lifestyle, however, you will certainly feel it the day you need to have access to the money.Have a plan as others have said and stick to it- you will sleep better at night.

Good luck!

Don't feel like you're alone in this. Happens to all of us. The proverbial "grass is always greener.."

I too have stayed put. As Sarah commented, everyone's time lines are different. I'm riding it out and doing dollar cost averaging.

Others may need funds in 6 months, of which I'd be in G. But if not at this point, sort of a mute point. My 2 cents.

Hope all had a great Christmas and all looking forward to a New Years REBOUND!

Very Respectfully,

Claus

My problem is that I never stick to my plan.  I always seems to think someone else's plan is better when I hear it.  Only to realize i should have just stuck with my original plan.

I had to laugh at this one a "being indecisive when I KNEW it was time to be safe"..........

If you KNEW you would have made that decision at that time. No one knows and you just proved this.

Come up with a plan (IPS) and stick to it. People who follow others will likely change strategies when it doesn't pan out and follow the next greatest advice......In the end they will likely lose..

Good luck
