I am retired and have not read up on the TSP in a few years.
I think the TSP makes wiggle room for emergencies.

I am not sure if you need to
draw a lump sum or what but if you can pay your medical
bills in payments you can draw money from the tsp in
payments based on the IRS life expectancy table and I
believe that is considered a full withdrawal,you should call
them and discuss this if monthly payments from tsp will
work. you still retain control of your money since this is
not an annuity purchase. This might tide you over till the
rules changes actually  go into affect.

Just thought I'd get some input.  I'm retired
military and we have some significant medical expenses to
cover.  I naively thought the new withdrawal options would
start almost immediately so I took out a small amount
figuring I could take out more withdrawals during this
year.  I'm getting to the point of needing to pull more
out but will have to pull it all out.  Any guesses how long
it will be before the new options are available?  I guess
that's just a crap shoot.  Really wanted to leave a
chunk in the TSP.
