Very interesting, I would also think we need to have the 5% match in the equation, but also wouldn't we need to put the salary in the equation also.

I think, however, you have to consider the 5% match, i.e. free money (in the example $137,000 x .05 = $6,850/year), that you get while contributing to TSP, along with the compound interest earned. I'm not sure it would make up the gap entirely but it might make the comparison a bit more even. I do, however, agree with the notion that benefits are not going to get more generous over time, rather likely headed in the opposite direction, so that it's a safer bet to retire sooner rather than later.
