That's an interesting point. An article I read making the case against using a bucket strategy did so based on investor psychology. They said most investors would not be able to simply rebalance their buckets according to some predetermined formula. They would be too tempted to go with the market of the moment. So the idea of most bucket strategies is to move money only once in a couple years and then leave it alone. Rebalancing in TSP would force you to make a decision every month.
So would a retiree take a proportional payment during a really bad month for the S fund and then refill it from G? Would they do so faithfully every month? The 2007 crash took 18 months to bottom. I'm not sure I have the fortitude to go off month after month dumping good money after bad into the S fund for a year and a half. But that is what you ought to do.
