Ensure their SSN is on the divorce decree portion that separates the TSP. Also, if you have two account (CIV and military) ensure it specifies which account to take from. Even if your military account is zero and you combined into your CIV account. I had to go back to court because the court order did not meet the requirements of TSP. Cost me another $2k in lawyer fees to modify.

Sorry for the downer post but I have limited knowledge of money matters and need some information.
I will be getting divorced and my wife will get 1/2 of my TSP balance.
When TSP sends her the check what type of account does she need to deposit it into, and how quickly after getting the check, to avoid having to pay taxes and penalties?
If she puts it into an IRA will this make the money safe? I do realize that once she begins to take payments out of the new account she will have to pay taxes. Just want to be sure she puts it in the right place to prevent paying taxes on the whole chunk at once.
Thanks!
