U.S. Retirement Confidence Survey
Chart of the Week for March 24, 2017 - March 30, 2017
On an annual basis, the Employee Benefit Research Institute ("EBRI") conducts a survey that gauges the views and attitudes of working-age and retired Americans regarding their confidence with regard to various aspects of retirement and related issues. The results of the survey are published in the Retirement Confidence Survey ("RCS"), and comparisons of the RCS results for 2016 and 2017 are noted in the chart above.
The majority of respondents still say they are very or somewhat confident about their ability to retire comfortably. However, the very or somewhat confident percentage fell to 60% in 2017 from 64% in 2016, and the not too confident or not at all confident percentage rose by a similar amount. Interestingly, individuals who are already retired are more confident about living comfortably in retirement (79% very or somewhat confident), than the survey respondents who are still working.
A comfortable retirement can come from a good plan based on an investor's current and expected lifestyle needs, time horizon, income, and other factors. Having both workplace and individual savings are an important part of a comprehensive retirement plan.
