For convenience. The latest deposits will get moved around the TSP funds with the next interfund transfer. The G-Fund is just a safe resting place until the next interfund transfer. There are times like 2000-2003, 2007-2009, 2011, and even Aug 2015-Jan 2016 when it is best to keep it safe.
