Re: [TSP_Strategy] Re: 20% tariff on Mexican imports

The only reason/goal for securing our southern border isn't for potential economic benefits such as making more jobs available for those here legally.  It's for national security reasons, and to stop the flow of illegals from the south.  To go along with what you've said below, our politicians (and even local law enforcement that is choosing not to do this) simply have to have the will to enforce the laws already on the books.

"The Wall is estimated to cost up to 25 billion dollars. Will someone explain to me how this will improve the US economy, and thus, heighten equities? It appears to be folly to me."

Other than satisfy a campaign promise, the wall will do little to improve the economy other then stimulate local border communities with infrastructure stimulus that is as productive for the economy as making bombs (not) vs building roads and bridges (does). It may very well create more problems then it fixes, as building a wall isn't going to keep humans out if they want in, and a wall only exasperates border conflicts with Mexico.

If we want to seriously address illegal border immigration we should have a real immigration debate, start topic - creating a national photo ID SSN card, enforce laws against hiring illegals, stop the war on drugs & the exporting of guns south of the border (a serious cause of refuge migration north, and support trade agreements that help improve economies south of the border that would give incentives to Mexicans & others to stay home.

I personally favor a national photo ID that can be used for driving, airplane boarding security pass, concealed carry permit, and voting.

As someone who pays a hefty IRS tax each year I'm certain the government knows who I am, where I live and whether I charged my visa for ammo. They can see me on Facebook so they know what I look like and they know where I vote. I'd just appreciate the convenience of having one card for everything. PS just because someone has hotels in numerous countries doesn't make them a qualified economist or trade representative. Just saying.

That political language was NOT in MY original comment starting the thread.  I am still waiting for anyone with some thoughts on whether a potential tariff on Mexican imports will affect our investments.
