The wall is also intended to reduce drug trafficking. A recent report from the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said that drug overdoses kill more people in the US than car accidents or guns. According to the BBC "According to a 2015 US government "national drug threat assessment", the bulk of illegal narcotics enter the US through border checkpoints and points of entry, hidden among more than 5.5 million commercial trucks that cross the US-Mexican border every year. Undocumented immigration is a similar story. Most of the Mexicans who are in the US illegally entered through legal means and then overstayed their visas, not by illicit border-crossing that a wall could prevent." I have to take the BBC report with a grain of salt. I have acquaintances who retired from DEA, Coast Guard, etc. who ran drug interdiction missions. Biggest problem the land-based interdiction had was stingy manpower and a lot of area to cover. Often they would chase decoys, a few people crossing the border illegally and distracted the agents from the larger group crossing in another area of the agents coverage. The Coasties faced the same challenges but had more interesting missions. The drug cartels construct purpose-built semi submersed boats to transport drugs to the US. They are virtually impossible to detect.
"The Wall" is one element in the interdiction mission but I question the ROI. Illegals also use the tunnels constructed to move drugs.

Illegal Immigration Is Actually Declining
Illegal Immigration Is Actually Declining Despite what campaign ads say. | |||||

Illegal immigration has been in a steady decline. Spending billions on a great wall IMHO is an incredibly misguided waste of money...money that could be used to help so many in this country.
