Yep, I should have listened to Sara.  I was paranoid ang got out 3wks earlier and lost out on some growth.  But I'm very glad to be in G right now.  The S whiplash is fun to watch when you don't have skin in the game.

Any thoughts on VIX?  Last year when the market dipped the VIX went up substantially.  I'm in Vanguard so I'm mulling over VIXY.  I've never shorted a stock or bought any inverse ETFs.  Just looking for some thoughts on the subject and if you think this is a good time to do it.

Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Retirement questions

Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Retirement questions

I lost a ton of sick leave because I thought it was 160 in hours for a month. Was glad I had the sick leave as I took 3 months after my back surgery and still added months to my time in service. But there is no way in hell I would ever go back. Retirement is good good!

Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Retirement questions

Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Retirement questions

There is an OPM chart that converts the hours of sick leave into months and days.  This is added to your term of service (similarly expressed in years, months and days).

The total is rounded down to years and months (days in excess are truncated) and that is used to compute your benefit.  The trick is ensure you have enough sick leave hours to make a whole month.

I'm told that sick time will be added to the formula for determining the amount of your FERS pension. Does every hour count, or is it taken as a group such as 40 hour blocks... And if it is blocks would odd number be discarded- for example you have 42 hours, or one week 2 hours; would the 2 hours be tossed?

Also- I keep getting emails from a "VS Approved Vendor" offering to walk me through everything relating to retirement from best days to retire to TAP annuities. I smell a rat. Who do I contact that actually works for the VA to get my pre retirement information?

Thanks!

Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Retirement questions

Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Retirement questions

I retired a couple of years ago.  I never took the retirement class.  I got a lot of information from Tammy Flanagan https://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2021/02/retirement-planning-index-2021-edition/171840/ and in my agency there was a retirement specialist that I could make one or two meetings with per year when I got within a year of retirement eligibility.  The retirement specialist was great.  She tracked down all of my paperwork that had my start date and she used that information to estimate my retirement income given a specific retirement date.

Personally, I don't like annuities for myself but my mother actually did pretty good with them. Her annuities seem very much like the L funds in the TSP.

Also, check out this little article https://www.federalretirement.net/retire_timeline_post.htm to know what to expect after retirement.  It was pretty close to my experience.

Good luck,

🙂

Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Retirement questions

Re: [TSPStrategy] Off topic: Retirement questions

As was said, only years and full months of service are used in the annuity computation. Full months are credited proportionately; leftover days are droppedThere are calculators available which, when you enter your date of retirement, will let you know how much SL you will lose if you leave it on the books. Handy thing that, letting you know how many days of SL you can use without breaking a month for credit.

Here is one of the best explanations in my opinion.  It lays it out super easy.

Why do you think the pullback will get worse? Do you see signs the Fed will raise interest rates? That would cause a big drop.
What about new Stimulus? What if that doesn't get approved by Congress?
