S&P 500 Index Monthly Returns
Chart of the Week for June 3, 2016 - June 9, 2016
The chart above shows the monthly returns for the S&P 500 Index ("S&P 500") for the 12-month period of June 2015 through May 2016. The S&P 500 consists of 500 companies representing larger capitalization stocks traded in the U.S. and is a benchmark commonly used to measure the performance of the U.S. stock market.
The S&P 500 was volatile over the one-year period, with six months having positive returns and six months having negative returns. The largest monthly positive return was 8.44% in October 2015, and the largest monthly negative return was -6.03% in August 2015. Concerns about the global economy, as well as speculation about U.S. interest rate policy and mixed U.S. economic indicators over the course of the 12-month period have impacted the monthly returns. In spite of the year-long volatility, recent returns have been positive as the months of March through May 2016 earned 6.78%, 0.39%, and 1.80%, respectively and the one-year annualized return is 1.72%.
