I disagree with sentiments that these are outsiders. I am retired 4 years now but came close to that mark but short of it. No transferred funds. No brilliant moves - I dropped the 40% in the big bust and another 25% or so in the recent bust. Other than that mostly in C or S fund except for a moderate long time in F fund where I lost 3% or so and soured on the F fund.
I believe the real key for me in building a decent sized TSP, which could have easily topped $1M with better moves, was in making sure from the very start I received the full match. Later on, with finances and children taken care of, maybe 2/3 of the way during my active contributions to TSP, I went up to the maximum allowed including the over 55(?) catchup. Advantage of course to being a GG15 with a locality that boosted funds somewhat, but many others were in my position and better such as many SESers.
