Charts of the Week
U.S. New Home Sales
Chart of the Week for March 22, 2019 - March 28, 2019
The chart above shows New Home Sales per month for the past 12 months. This data is published by the U.S. Census Bureau based on surveys with thousands of builders and building project owners.
U.S. New Home Sales totaled 607,000 units in January 2019, down 6.9% from December 2018's revised 662,000 units and also down 4.1% year-over-year. Sales fell by double digits in three of the four Census regions, only the West region posted a gain for January 2019. The median price for a new single-family home fell 3.8% year-over-year as well. Economists see the fall in the median price as a good sign for affordability going forward, but also note the relatively high current mortgage rates that may be challenging for home sales going forward.
