U.S. Budget Deficit
Chart of the Week for March 8, 2019 - March 14, 2019
The U.S. Treasury Budget, also known as the Budget Deficit or Surplus, is a monthly account of the deficit or surplus status of the U.S. Government. The major sources of data include monthly accounting reports by Federal entities and disbursing officers, as well as daily reports from the Federal Reserve banks. The chart above shows the Budget Deficit in billions of dollars for the period January 2018 through January 2019.
The January 2019 Treasury Budget showed a surplus of $8.7 billion dollars, an improvement from the December 2018 deficit of $-13.5 billion. However, the January 2019 surplus was below the January 2018 surplus of $49.2 billion, and the accumulated deficit for the first four months of fiscal year 2019 is -$310.3 billion compared to -$175.7 for the same period in fiscal 2018, a 77% increase. For the first four months of this fiscal year, receipts fell by 2% while spending rose by more than 9%. Economists note that the deficit may continue to grow as the effect of the individual and corporate tax cuts passed in 2018 continue to impact revenue and spending continues to increase.
