Maybe this is a contrarian opinion at this point. Google 5 day rule. If in the first five trading sessions the market rises, the expectations are that the year will end positive. The 9th is tomorrow and is the 5th trading day. Of course, this isn't always true, it fails about 20% of the time, including 2018. No science here. Just giving the group an excuse to be positive.
The Stock Trader's Almanac provides statistics on market movements each year. The first five days of January is one statistic that is routinely followed. It is viewed as an early warning system. A positive month of January is viewed as an even stronger prediction of a positive year.
