I wasn't around for the big shutdown in the 90s so maybe someone who was can shed some light. Assuming everything is approved for retroactive pay, does the government plan to divide the retroactive pay into different checks or lump it all in one? If they are lumped into one payment, we will be charged a higher tax rate and theoretically bring home less which can be recovered when we file our return over a year later. The bigger concern is about lumping two or three pay periods together. The issue there is that the amount will exceed the bi-weekly pay cap meaning some of the back pay is lost for good.
