Capital Markets Review (as of 3/31/2016)

Chart of the Week for April 8, 2016 - April 14, 2016

Capital market returns were mixed in the first quarter as U.S. Large-Cap Stocks, Emerging Market Stocks, U.S. Bonds and U.S. High Yield Bonds all produced positive returns. International Developed Market Stocks and U.S. Small-Cap Stocks produced negative returns in the quarter.

Capital market returns in U.S. Dollars were mixed in the first quarter of 2016. U.S. Bonds, U.S. High Yield Bonds, U.S. Large-Cap Stocks and Emerging Market Stocks had positive returns, while U.S. Small-Cap Stocks and International Developed Market Stocks had negative returns as shown in the chart above. Over the last year, U.S. Bonds and U.S. Large-Cap Stocks provided positive returns while U.S. High Yield Bonds, U.S. Small-Cap Stocks, International Developed Market Stocks, and Emerging Markets Stocks all produced negative returns. Over the trailing 5- and 10-year periods, the only negative return was Emerging Market Stocks for the 5-year period.

For the first quarter of 2016, Emerging Markets Stocks (5.71%) provided the highest return, aided by strong returns from large Emerging Market countries such as Brazil (28.48%) and Russia (15.75%). U.S. High Yield Bonds (3.35%) and U.S. Bonds (3.03%) also posted positive returns, as interest rates generally fell during the quarter, and recovering oil prices helped securities of the energy sector issuers that issue of lot of High Yield Debt. U.S. Large-Cap stocks (1.35%) ended the quarter with positive returns after falling sharply early in the quarter. International Developed Market Stocks (-3.01%) fell, as negative returns in Japan (-6.52%) and Switzerland (-5.54%) impacted Developed Markets returns. U.S. Small-Cap Stocks (-1.52%) were impacted by negative returns in small-cap growth stocks.

  • U.S. Bonds are represented by the Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index.
  • U.S. High Yield Bonds are represented by the Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield Index.
  • U.S. Large-Cap Stocks are represented by the S&P 500 Index.
  • U.S. Small-Cap Stocks are represented by the Russell 2000 Index.
  • International Developed Market Stocks are represented by the MSCI EAFE (Net) Index.
  • Emerging Market Stocks are represented by the MSCI Emerging Markets (Net) Index.
