Thanks, Linda. With under 3 year to retirement, I've been exploring a similar strategy - being more aggressive and agile with my payroll contribution allocation to capture market trends, and more conservative and stable with my account distribution to preserve wealth. Not enough time yet to see how well this strategy will perform.
One small difference from your mix though. An adviser I spoke with suggested using the L2020 Fund instead of G for a modest allocation of new contributions. He said it's the closest thing that the TSP has to a Balanced Fund. Makes sense to me. So now only my account distribution has any percentage in G. New contributions are only in C, S, I, and L2020.
I contacted Tammy Flanagan and one of her round table guests who mentioned this strategy in a recent Gov Exec article for more insight. No response yet.
